Marcus was discharged after five days, stable enough to manage outpatient care but forever changed by what he'd lost. His parents flew back to California with promises to call daily. David stayed for an additional week, helping Marcus clean his apartment and re-establish basic routines before reluctantly returning to his job.
The apartment felt different now—smaller, sadder, marked by the week of manic destruction. David had photographed all the paintings as requested, then helped Marcus decide what to keep and what to paint over. Most were painted over. Looking at them hurt too much, reminded Marcus too viscerally of what he'd sacrificed for their creation.
