The weeks following Krishnan's ultimatum passed in a strange suspension of normalcy. They continued to share their bed, to eat meals together, to discuss practical matters like doctor's appointments and preparations for the baby. But underneath the routine of daily life, their marriage was slowly dissolving like salt in water—still present but fundamentally changed, the familiar structures weakening with each passing day.
Krishnan had not left, but his emotional withdrawal was complete. He spoke to Bhavani with the careful politeness of a stranger, fulfilled his obligations as her husband with mechanical precision, and spent increasingly long hours away from their small house. Sometimes she would catch him looking at her with an expression that mixed love and loss in equal measure, as if he were already mourning what they could have been.
