The morning sickness hit Bhavani like a wave as she bent over the basin washing rice. She barely made it to the small bathroom before retching, her body rejecting the meager breakfast she'd managed to eat. Through the thin walls, she could hear Krishnan getting ready for work, the familiar sounds of his morning routine—the splash of water, the clearing of throat, the rustle of his work clothes.
She'd been hiding the pregnancy symptoms for a week now, but it was getting harder. Yesterday, the smell of fish curry had made her so nauseous she'd had to leave Lakshmi teacher's shop early, claiming a headache. Soon, people would start to notice. Soon, she would have to make good on the promises she'd made to Aditya.
